James & Ann Harnden

We don't have much information on James and next to nothing on Ann.  We do know that James married an Ann as of the affidavit James and Ann signed for Melvina (Harnden) Watson's request for widow's pension.  Their address was listed as 81 Bethune Ave. 8, Detroit, Mich.  This was dated July 24, 1905 and they were 65 and 59 years of age.

James seemed to be close to Melvina and her children.  Apparently James worked for his nephew, Nelson Watson (Melvina's son) at his shop in Detroit, MI.  James also attended the 1936 Watson Family Reunion.  Click here to see the family reunion photo.

Adventurer Gets Film Thrill at 94
With Pioneers at 5, He enjoys Western Stories Now

Although he saw some real adventure when he was a lad of five, James Madison Harnden of 14210 Grandmont Road, who celebrates his ninety-fourth birthday Thursday, gets just as much enjoyment out of the movies and Western stories as any boy.

In 1850 his family moved from New York to Ohio and then to Michigan in a cart drawn by oxen and young James had a taste of life on the open road which he has never forgotten.  And now, at age of 94, he still takes a great many trips downtown, and likes to go for long walks, even in the coldest weather.  His eyes are as good as they ever were, and telephone conversations don't cause him any trouble, he says.

Mr. Harnden was educated in the Detroit public schools.  He now lives with a nephew, Frank Whitney.  His wife and only daughter died several years ago.
