Burnes A. Townsend

Burnes A. Townsend enlisted into Company A, 11th Cavalry on 9-21-1863 at Marshall, MI for three years at the age of 19.  His enrollment papers listed his occupation as a farmer.  It stated . .  "this soldier has gray eyes, dark hair, light complexion, is 5 feet, 5 inches".

In the book, Michigan Soldiers and Sailors, Vol 41, it states Burnes "died of disease at Camp Nelson, KY on 12-16-1864.  Buried in National Cemetery, Lexington, KY.  Grave No, 873."

However, in Marshall, MI in the Townsend Cemetery there is a stone for Burnes A. Townsend.  It states that he was in Co. A, 11th Cavalry and died at Lexington, KY.  It shows his death date to be 1-10-1865 aged 20.
